What is it?
The World Baseball Classic, also referred to as “The Classic”, is an international baseball tournament held every three years. It falls in line with the FIFA World Cup, in terms of a non-Olympic worldwide tournament. It is sanctioned by (WBSC) the World Baseball Softball Confederation, the sport’s global governing body, and organized by World Baseball Classic Inc. The tournament was proposed in 2005 by the MLB and the players association, and the first tournament was held in 2006. It is the first of its kind to have national teams featuring professional players from the top-level major leagues around the world.
2023 WBC:

The last World Baseball Classic was nothing short of pure entertainment. Between Shohei Ohtani who won MVP playing for Japan and what everyone was calling “Captain America”, Trea Turner. Trea Turner was hitting home runs left and right, American fans knew that when he came up to bat, they were going to be happy. It came down to America and Japan in the championship. In the final at bat of the tournament, two former teammates faced off in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December of 2023, and the WBC took place in March of 2023, so these two were fresh off of a season together. The count was full, Japan had a one run lead over the U.S, and there it was. Ohtani struck out Mike Trout and Japan celebrated as it was their third WBC, reining themselves in as the most successful nation.
2026 WBC Preview:

You’d think after being labeled as one of the most powerful superheroes, you would gain another invite to play for your country in the tournament, wrong. In a private interview with only a few media outlets, Turner expressed his feelings towards the situation. “It’s something I wanted to do, but the phone never rang,” Turner said. “It’s so much fun. I gladly would have done it again. I said it last time, if they ever ask, I would say yes.” Otherwise, the rosters are stacked with household names. A lot of young prospects will be shown off as well, like Joseph Contreras (RHP), who is the 35th-ranked prospect in the 2026 MLB draft. Contreras will be throwing for team Brazil. Nolan McLean is another intriguing prospect, also a right handed pitcher. McLean will be throwing for team USA.
Impacts:
Although playing for your country is extremely important and everyone who does will take pride in it, there are risks that can put any player’s MLB season in jeopardy. In the 2023 WBC, Edwin Diaz suffered a season-ending torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Pitching for Puerto Rico, Diaz wasn’t even playing in a game when this injury happened. It came in a post game celebration. Edwin Diaz didn’t think twice when being asked to play in 2026, he claimed it was an “easy decision”. Other notable injuries were Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, suffering a broken thumb, and Seiya Suzuki’s oblique strain.
