After finishing last season with an impressive 8-5 overall record and 8-3 in conference matches, the Upper Merion boys’ tennis team enters the spring season looking to improve and compete for the top spot in the PAC. With several experienced players returning to the lineup and many athletes dedicating the time to improving their game during the offseason, the Vikings are seeking to build on the success of last season.
Head Coach Tyler Triolo believes the team’s experience will help them throughout the season. “Our experience will be a great asset to help us in high pressure situations.” said Coach Triolo.
Returning Leaders
One of the key players returning this season is junior captain Dillon Doan, who will lead the singles lineup. Last year, Dillon had an impressive postseason, finishing 5th in the PAC for singles, placing 4th in PAC doubles, and qualifying for Districts in both singles and doubles.
Senior captain John Haney also returns after making his PAC singles debut last season and advancing to the second round of the tournament. His experience, leadership, and character will be crucial for the team this year.
Another strong doubles pairing returning to the lineup is Rafal Grabowski and Cole Hanlon who has come off making his PAC doubles debut last season .Both played a major role in one of the team’s most exciting matches. Not only have they continued to grow as players, but also as leaders, since they were recently nominated as captains for the 2026 team.
A Memorable Victory
One of the biggest highlights from last season came in a close match against Upper Perkiomen High School. With every other varsity match already finished, the overall score stood tied at 3-3, leaving the outcome of the entire match resting on first doubles. All the players, coaches, and spectators all gathered while watching closely as Rafal Grabowski and Cole Hanlon battled through a long, hard fought match that went back and forth for 3 sets. In the end, the duo pulled through in the final set, securing the deciding point, giving Upper Merion a thrilling 4-3 victory.
New Opportunities
The Vikings will need to replace former third singles player Eytan Kuznits, who graduated after a strong season that included a PAC singles debut, a 4th place finish in PAC doubles, and a trip to Districts for doubles.
Although losing Eytan, the team believes it has the depth to fill in the lineup. One newcomer expected to make an early impact is freshman Aaron Varam, who could play a key role in the singles lineup.
Offseason Work
The team has spent the offseason preparing whenever possible. Since Upper Merion does not have tennis courts on campus, players held optional workouts at Bob White Park. Several athletes also attended tennis clinics at local clubs or competed in tournaments to improve their skills. This extra effort and dedication could lead the team to becoming strong at every level this season.
Big Matches Ahead
Upper Merion will open its season on March 17th against Owen J. Roberts High School, a team the Vikings are hoping to defeat for the first time in recent years. Another important opponent will be Methacton High School, giving the Vikings two big chances to prove themselves this year.
Senior Night
One of the most important matches of the year will take place on April 9th, when Upper Merion faces Upper Perkiomen again for Senior Night. The match starts at 3:30PM and will be played at Upper Merion’s home courts located at Norristown Area High School, since the team does not have courts on campus. After last season’s intense 4-3 battle, the matchup is expected to be another competitive contest.
Come Support the Vikings
In one word Coach Triolo described this year’s team as “tenacious”, a group that continues to work hard while supporting one another. With experienced leaders, talented newcomers, and strong team chemistry, the Vikings are hoping for another successful season.
Students who are able to make the trip to Norristown are encouraged to come out and support the team, especially for the Senior Night matchup. Having a crowd there would help bring school spirit while cheering on the Vikings this spring!
