In an unexpected championship matchup, Venezuela defeated Team USA 3-2 in the World Baseball Classic final, completing one of the biggest upsets in recent international baseball. Coming into the game, most fans viewed the United States as the clear favorites. With a roster loaded with MLB All Stars and one of the deepest lineups in the tournament, Team USA looked bound to become champions.
The Road to The Final
Venezuela’s path to the championship was far from easy, as they battled through a difficult bracket as they defeated Italy as well as winning a massive semifinal game where they eliminated the defending champions, Japan. That victory over Japan (who won the previous Classic led by captain Shohei Ohtani) proved Venezuela were no longer underdogs, they were recognized as contenders.
On the other hand, Team USA returned to the final for the third straight tournament but once again fell short after previously losing to Japan in the last championship.
Pitching Matchups
The final featured a strong starting pitching battle. Venezuela went to Eduardo Rodríguez, while the United States countered with Nolan McLean. Both pitchers delivered the intensity early, keeping the game tight and scoreless through the first two innings.
Venezuela struck first in the third inning and extended their lead to 2-0 after a solo home run in the fifth. After that, their bullpen took charge as they shut down a powerful U.S. lineup for the majority of the game.
USA Stars Go Quiet
Despite their stacked starting lineup that combined for 22 MLB All Star selections, Team USA’s biggest names couldn’t deliver when it mattered most. Multiple superstars in the league failed to produce in the biggest moment, including team captain Aaron Judge, who among others went hitless in the game.
The lack of offense became the storyline for the U.S., as their lineup did not have the passion or motivation that team Venezuela brought. They were not able to find their rhythm for the majority of the game against Venezuela’s pitching staff.
Bryce Harper’s Redemption Moment Falls Just Short
Leading up to the final, Bryce Harper had faced lots of adversity and criticism after the 2025 MLB playoffs. Headlines began after comments from Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski questioned whether Harper was still “elite” as it became a hot topic across the baseball world. Harper did not deny it, acknowledging he needed to be better while holding himself to a higher standard.
Through much of the tournament and into the final, Harper had been quiet, struggling to make a meaningful impact for Team USA.
Until the biggest moment.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Philadelphia’s own Bryce Harper stepped up and delivered. With one runner on, Harper crushed a clutch two run home run to tie the game at 2-2, bringing life back into Team USA and causing the crowd to explode in shock.
For a brief moment, it felt like the momentum had completely shifted.
Venezuela Responds Immediately
Unfortunately for the U.S. that momentum didn’t last long.
In the top of the ninth inning, Venezuela answered right back. After getting a runner on base, they delivered the go ahead RBI double to take a 3-2 lead, silencing the U.S. comeback dreams.
In the bottom of the ninth, Venezuela’s closer Daniel Palencia pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning, retiring Team USA and securing the championship.
A Historic Upset
From being overlooked to world champions, Venezuela’s run will go down as one of the most memorable in World Baseball Classic history.
For Team USA, it’s another heartbreaking finish, as they fall short once again despite being loaded with talent. Although Bryce Harper delivered a clutch moment that fans won’t forget, it wasn’t enough to overcome a resilient Venezuelan team that proved everyone wrong.
